Research on Content and language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Elementary School in South Asia

Southeast Asia has made more advanced endeavors in English education than Japan, and it is said that Japan is lagging more than 10 years behind Southeast Asia, especially in English education at elementary school. Many countries in Southeast Asia actively incorporate a teaching method called Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) that integrates academic subject content and foreign language learning, and various types of practical research have been conducted in recent years. In this project, while staying at the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Regional Language Center (RELC) in Singapore, the author investigated how CLIL is being practiced in Southeast Asia and clarified its benefits and problems, while also analyzing textbooks on other subjects written in English in Singapore. Through these activities, the author aims to find suggestions as to how CLIL can be incorporated into Japanese elementary schools, where English language is planned to be put introduced as an academic subject in 2020, and what kind of English textbooks can be created.
