The Association for Corporate Support of the Arts (KMK) held international conferences in Malaysia and Tokyo as the second year of the project. Presentations were made by Japanese companies that engage in continual corporate patronage in Malaysia—where private-sector culture promotion has yet to take root—at the international conference in Malaysia (New Economic Growth through Arts –Role of Corporations, and ASEAN Network–). Case studies of regional development promotion utilizing local cultural resources were introduced and views were exchanged. The conference was attended by Malaysian government officials, persons involved in fine arts and culture, and Japanese corporations with local subsidiaries. In Malaysia, we visited a music hall, cultural facilities, and other locations; observed events; and exchanged opinions with Think City, which promotes cultural development. The goal was to establish an ASEAN platform, but it was affirmed that the establishment of interim support organizations is in line with the actual circumstances considering the different cultures and backgrounds in each country. Potential key figures for establishing interim support organizations in both Indonesia and Malaysia—including fine arts and culture groups—were invited as guests to the Tokyo Forum "Corporate Philosophy in Promoting the Support of Arts and Culture—Future Business and Arts Partnership for Indonesian and Malaysian Corporations" held in January for more specific brainstorming on the founding of such organizations. Exchanges of views took place with local subsidiaries, governments, and researchers.

From the Organizer

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with My Performing Arts Agency (MyPAA) at the Tokyo Conference in May 2016, and we were able to encourage local corporate patronage via the Malaysian conference held in August. As a result, we made progress in cultural promotion by private-sector corporations in both countries, including MyPAA playing a central role in holding regular meetings with local corporations in Malaysia, and a cosmetic company establishing a CSR division in Indonesia. The Tokyo Forum held in January was an opportunity to demonstrate the significance of corporate patronage as cultivated by Japanese companies for many years. Lively interviews and discussions also took place during the observations of Japanese corporations. Questions from overseas parties were a meaningful chance for Japanese corporations to gain awareness.
