Project for further exploration of Maritime Asia and pursuit of its expression
The seas surrounding the Southeast Asian region may be considered one of the ancestral roots of the maritime cultures I have explored mainly in the strait between Japan and South Korea, where the Tsushima Warm Current flows, including the traditional free divers known as “Sea Women” or "Ama" in Japan. I will attempt to visit fishing villages and communities around Mindanao in the Philippines to immerse myself in the everyday lives of those people who live on small-scale fishing involving free-diving, an ancient method of fishing, and to re-imagine human activities that continue to this day as well as the cultural aspects of the Japanese archipelago as part of the Pacific island chain by exploring a worldview in fluidity that may emerge from my own first-hand experience in the seas. I will also attempt to reexamine ancient mythologies conveying the fluid worldview that is believed to have been brought by one of the first group of people to reach the Japanese archipelago by crossing the sea. I intend to do this by exploring the lives of contemporary people in the region from which such mythologies might have originated. Furthermore, by imagining ancient perspectives on the universe, or the elements that inspired humans to tell such stories, my aim is to explore expressions that irradiate the present human condition both from the past and the future, beyond time and space.
