“It felt safe here”
These are portraits of people living in Chiba, Japan – who find themselves spending months, sometimes years of their lives in their bedrooms only surfing the internet, reading manga and, for the most part, not leaving the isolation of their rooms. Usually males in their twenties, they are Japan's "missing millions" —commonly known as Hikikomori—one of the biggest social and health problems facing contemporary Japan.
