We conducted a survey, held a symposium and produced a pamphlet. At the symposium there were a total of 16 speakers from Japan and ASEAN countries, including the ambassador to Japan, the ambassador to Malaysia, as well as academics. The symposium opened with keynote speeches from the Japanese and ASEAN ambassadors on how to deepen cultural exchanges between Japan and ASEAN countries. In addition a presentation was given based on the survey results and focusing on young people in Japan and ASEAN countries’ level of satisfaction with their daily lives and sense of well-being, The afternoon discussion that followed on from the morning presentation allowed for lively debate about topics such as democracy and level of satisfaction, Japanese and ASEAN youth, and effective ways to strengthen ties between Japan and ASEAN nations. A consensus emerged among the speakers regarding accelerating academic exchanges to further strengthen ties between Japan and ASEAN countries, and the theme of “Family and School” for the next fiscal year’s symposium was agreed upon. So as to share the fruits of this year’s seminar, a compilation of abstracts was put together and widely distributed.

From the Organizer

Based on the feedback and praise received from participants from each country, gathering together academics from Japan and ASEAN member nations allowed for a deepening of intellectual exchange between them. We were also able to get great comments and feedback from attendees who were a help when it came to thinking about the future of ASEAN and Japan, and we obtained information not available through the media. There were many students among the participants, and we heard opinions and questions relevant to the discussion topics with lively debate that was a big success in itself. Thanks to the Japan Foundation grant we received not only financial help, but also elevation of the credibility of the whole project, which was a great help in terms of inviting guests and attracting participants.
