To research traditional and contemporary theater in Vietnam, and promotion of the theatrical art interchange
The main objective of this project is to grasp the scale and current state of contemporary theater and traditional art in Vietnam, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It also examines the influence of Vietnamese artists on regional development and civil society, both during war and after war. In the capital city of Hanoi, the author surveys what kind of diverse theater activities are being developed, mainly by art organizations under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. In Ho Chi Minh City in Southern Vietnam, the author focuses on performances by private theater companies, and explores their features and the possibility for joint productions with Japan in the future. In addition, in Hue in Central Vietnam, the author observes the "International Performing Arts Hue Festival" led by the government, and considers the current state of art and problems that are rooted in the area. From the viewpoint of "enriching society with theater", this project aims to strengthen friendship between Vietnam and Japan, and to approach the role and potential of Vietnamese theater in the Indochina Peninsula from the aspects of both discussion and experiential practice.
