Focusing on the ARTS Zone (Advocate Right to Safety Zone for Children) Project, an effort to protect the rights of children and defend them from violence through art and dramatic performance, we made interviews with people concerned, collected related materials in the PETA Theater Center library, and conducted an field survey in Barangay where PETA has deep relationship, in August 2015. In November 2015, Marichu Belarmino-Cariño and Lotlot D. Bustamante, director of ARTS Zone Project were invited to present lectures and workshops at Tsuda University and nearby elementary schools. This provided PETA and university staff members, Japanese stage performers, staff members from local elementary schools, and local residents a chance to interact and communicate.

From the Organizer

While we were able to conduct a field survey in Balangay and interviews with stakeholders thanks to the vigorous support and cooperation of PETA members in 2015, we didn’t have the opportunity for observation reffering to what kind of workshops PETA offers to parents, teachers and stakeholders. However, in 2016, the two invited artists - particularly Cris, who was deeply involved in developing the ARTS Zone workshops in addition to helping write the ARTS Zone handbook – had an excellent understanding of the project and were able to deliver something close to the workshops from the Philippines to participants. We also had a deep understanding of PETA’s Theater for Advocacy as project orgnizer, and also learned that PETA’s Integrated Theater Arts and pedagogy can be utilized when teaching various subjects in school education.
