We conducted a study on Japan and the Philippines, read a transcript composed from the interviews, and then composed a script based upon discussions with guests holding close connections to the Philippines. The theme of the performance addressed relevant topic as our motif such as accepting overseas personnel at Japanese nursing-care sites and the reality of everyday lives of them as laborers from overseas. Set primarily in the shelters that serve as a place to turn to for women, the story is built around a Filipina protagonist, while dealing with gender perspective such as female independence. By having actors in Japan and the Philippines learn more about the society in which they each live, a deeper connection could be formed, with those results shared with viewers as well through performance.

From the Organizer
By creating a performance that vividly depicts the societal background of Japan and the Philippines, an environment could be formed in which deeper understanding and respect of each-other’s cultural and societal conditions could be achieved. In 2016, a reading was held in Chiang Mai with the cooperation of the Thailand team, opinions exchanged, and accounts of immigrant laborers in Thailand heard. In the study of Thailand and the Philippines, we were able to hear the voices of people who deal with the issues of gender, nursing, and disability in Thai and Philippine society. Afterwards, we invited the members from Thailand and the Philippines to a workshop where information gained from the study on these themes, societal conditions, and the facts of their daily lives were shared, and we examined how we could transform these into the performance. The grant allowed the study and workshop to be held, reinforcing our relationship in preparation for the 3rd year of performance, interpreting a multifaceted theme, receiving stimulus, and expanding the possibilities of creativity.
