The restoration of the Western Causeway of Angkor Wat is a vital cultural project involving Japan and Cambodia. It is also a site manifesting the technical and cultural exchange, study, and training, of both nations. By a mutual exchange of technological knowhow with the APSARA Authority of Cambodia, we jointly conduct the work of construction, and since we began in 2015, our aim is to conclude the work within a period of 6 years, that is, by 2020. By inviting people and sending them out as delegates, both parties seek to realize the work at the site for both nations, and promote it on the basis of mutual technology transfer and detailed planning.
From December 2015 to June 30, 2016, we conducted in-depth studies on areas of Angkor Wat that are in need of restoration, and focused on measures to deal with the torrential rains. We also pondered over problems evoked by tourism and rainwater at the World Heritage sites of Japan, and drafted solutions related to the tackling of those issues. With teams involving experts of both nations we intend to realize our task, which includes among others a study of the Western Causeway and an archaelogical enquiry within the waters of the encircling moat, a preliminary study of the Western Causeway to be enabled by the dispatching of experts, safety supervision, the training and guidance of equipment operators, the creation of plans for constructing a temporary pier as an alternative to the Western Causeway, the provision of guidance at construction sites, providing training in stone processing technology for masons, and other related issues.
