In order to stimulate the interest of Vietnamese people toward Japan’s significant sites and cultures via television, we produced Giao Luu VIET NHAT?! JAPAN & VIETNAM in collaboration with the Vietnam state-run broadcasting station (VTV). The show was an experience-based information program which followed Vietnamese artists visiting various regions of Japan with Japanese artists as their guide, experiencing Japanese culture while exchanging culture with their guides. We provided new perspectives and values to create a program which allows viewers to “discover, marvel, and learn.” Our goal was to make Japan more relatable to Vietnamese people through television by introducing positive things about Japan and common features between the 2 countries. We re-aired the program multiple times and even posted it on the VTV web site so that we could increase the amount of exposure. We were also able to teach VTV about Japanese production methods and camera techniques through our collaborative production efforts.

From the Organizer
The most significant accomplishment of the project was that the VTV staff were able to experience Japanese production methods through the creation of the program. Due to cultural and habitual differences there was a wide gap between Vietnamese and Japanese methods, but by actually composing filming schedules and learning how to manage shooting, the VTV staff were able to gain much practical training. The VTV staff did indeed obtain solid network and filming skills thanks to the project being composed of 6 whole programs. We also had the VTV staff, as promoters of Japanese culture, look into to Japanese TV broadcasting methods. As a result, picture-in-picture methods were used in the programs, just like for Japanese TV shows.
