Spirit of Nature: A comparison study of Okinawa and Isan Dyeing and Weaving

This project is a study of textile design and production in Okinawa, Japan, in a comparison with that of Isan, northeast Thailand. Okinawa and Isan both have a long history of traditional textile crafts. Although each has its own remarkable textile crafts and cultures, they share some common techniques and inspirations. Evidently, nature is a source of creativity in both dyeing and weaving materials, as well as patterns. The study in Okinawa was carried out in two parts. Firstly, there were field trips to the main weaving and dyeing areas where interviews and practicing took place. Secondly, there was a workshop with a local artist. The objectives of the project were to compare the design, methods of dyeing and weaving methods of Isan, Thailand and Okinawa, Japan, create textile art inspired by or combined with the design or methods of Isan and Okinawan textile craft while creating textile-artist and designer-network relationships between the two countries to foster future collaborations.
